Discovery Canyon in Red Deer is the perfect quick getaway from Calgary, especially if you’re looking for a fun day out with the family. The park is well-designed for kids to enjoy leisure time, with a natural river-fed water play area that’s both safe and exciting. The $6 tube rentals are super convenient and affordable, making it easy to spend hours floating down the gentle rapids. The park also has plenty of green space for picnics and relaxing in the sun. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for a day trip—highly recommend if you’re in the area!

5/5. Spacious. Large parking lot. Play structure for kids. Tubing was just wow. Water was a bit cold for my small kids. You just have to pay 6$ for a tube and enjoy. Sand beach near water which my little one enjoyed the most. Washroom has changing rooms as well. You can spend whole day there without getting bored.

5 star experience in Alberta! (Since there are a lot of reviews I’ll focus on the useful).
It’s a man-made river using the actual Battle River as a water source. The kids pay $6 for a wristband which let them use the tubes. They go up a path where there is a miniature waterfall connected to a small pool. Once you get on your tube it’s a few minutes until you reach the bottom of the river which opens up onto a small and shallow man-made lake with a beach. Your kids can build sandcastles at the beach, swim, go down the river, picnic on the grass, play at the really fantastic playground or eat at the concession. It’s a whole half day experience.
Adults can also go, I went with my toddler, and weigh 130 lbs plus his 25 lbs, but bottomed out at a few places. Anyone much heavier might have a hard time not getting stuck since it’s very shallow.
I went on a Thursday at supper time when it was warm. It was not crowded but it was busy. I don’t think I would go on a weekend as it was already busy on an off-day. The wait times would be too long to enjoy much.

The open spaces are perfect for a picnic, whether you're a small group or have a large family.

The best part is that it's affordable, even if you have lots of kids. With plenty of water activities and the summer sun adding to the excitement, it's a place where both kids and adults can create lasting memories.

Arrived to Discovery Canyon today (July 26) to discover the water part is closed, perhaps due to poor water quality, and will be for a while. It seems like it would be fun if it was open and running. We had brought our own 36” tubes and I think they would fit just fine. The park is fun and if we are ever back in the area we will come back to check out the water part.

Went on a sunny day and brought our own solid tubes (found 2 extras at Canadian Tire for $20). It wasn’t as busy as we expected so we could have just paid the $6 to get a bracelet and use theirs. Since it was free to slide down we made sure to get some treats at the concession. We appreciated the kind staff in bright pink tank tops that helped move people along in slow parts and were there to answer questions. We also liked the use of their air compressor to pump up our tubes when needed.

Small ponds and sandy, shallow water where kids can play easily. There’s tree shade for parents to relax. I love the ice cream because the staff always make one scoop as big as it can be.
For only $6, you can have a cool summer.
