The Halifax-Dartmouth Ferry is the oldest saltwater ferry in North America and the second oldest in the world, after the Mersey Ferry of Liverpool and Birkenhead.
It is a fantastic transportation service and it is worth noting how Mr. Edward Cornwallis commissioned the first ferry in 1752. A visionary at the time, it was widely used to move materials back and forth, and then became a ferry until 1816, when it was given the name Sherborke. This ferry operated until 1830, but continuous ferry service remained the only efficient way to cross the harbor until 1955; the progression of ferries was achieved through revitalization projects in the 1970s.
In 1994, the City of Dartmouth transferred control of the ferry system to Metro Transit, later known as Halifax Transit. and here we are now 😉

Le Halifax-Dartmouth Ferry est le plus ancien ferry en eau salée d'Amérique du Nord et le deuxième plus ancien au monde, après le Mersey Ferry de Liverpool et Birkenhead.
Il s'agit d'un service de transport fantastique et il convient de noter que M. Edward Cornwallis a commandé le premier ferry en 1752. Visionnaire à l'époque, il a été largement utilisé pour transporter des matériaux dans les deux sens, puis est devenu un ferry jusqu'en 1816, date à laquelle on lui a donné le nom de "sherborke". Ce ferry a fonctionné jusqu'en 1830, mais le service continu de ferry est resté le seul moyen efficace de traverser le port jusqu'en 1955 ; la progression des ferries a été réalisée grâce à des projets de revitalisation dans les années 1970.
En 1994, la ville de Dartmouth a transféré le contrôle du système de ferry à Metro Transit, plus tard connu sous le nom de Halifax Transit. et voilà où nous en sommes aujourd'hui 😉

Wonderful experience across to Alderney landing in Dartmouth and back! Very nice views of the bridge and Halifax/Dartmouth skyline.
I really don't understand why you need exact change of $3 per person to go... In fact why can't we use a card! It's not the 19th century...
Also, I would get the Ferry windows cleaned from outside.

Nice service. Nice staff. Everybody is laid back and provides good efficient and reasonably priced service across the harbour. Also, if you're a tourist, it's a cheap way to get to see Halifax from the water and also visit Dartmouth. If you don't want to visit, just stay on and return.

The ferry is a really nice and easy mode of transportation with beautiful views of the Halifax waterfront. It’s a great way to travel between Dartmouth and downtown while enjoying the scenery. However, the boats themselves could use some updates, and the process for purchasing tickets could be clearer for visitors — especially those unfamiliar with the system. Overall, still a pleasant and affordable experience that adds to the charm of visiting Halifax!

What a great little ride across and back. They're doing improvements as well. Great photo of a rigged sailing ship as we waited. Fantastic opportunity to see all thing marine.

Oh halifax ferry how we will miss you. There’s something charming about taking a nice little ferry trip over the river and it’s especially beautiful at night with the city lights. We regularly spotted otters and seals during the day too! Staff were always helpful altho some a little rude at times. Pricing is super good if your paying a week pass and it also allows buss travel so cant complain there at all! If we come back we will be using it again!

While it has a limited seating area, it will be demolished and replaced with a new building. For this old building, all services were perfect and managed. We had a great chat with the officials of Halifax Transit, who are responsible for managing this service to be comfortable and on time.
