The location of Illinois first capital until it flooded. The church has been moved 3 times due to flooding. Very interesting history lesson. Grandkids enjoyed learning about the history of their home state!!

Fun place to check out if you are a history buff. Lots of local history right here. It’s free by the way. A good place to take your kids and have a picnic!

Definitely off the beaten path to get here. Located in Kaskaskia, which is an Illinois enclave on the Missouri side of the Mississippi. That alone was worth the experience for me, but it was fun to say I saw the Liberty Bell of the West. Not much else to talk about around here. It's a mostly barren old town that, I assume due to multiple heavy floods, drove everyone but a few farmers to higher ground. The streets around here are still organized in a grid, just only a handful of actual buildings on them.

The church next door is exceptionally pretty for the area.

Seems to be in the middle of nowhere, but if you know history this place is full of it. Only if the bell could talk haha. George Rogers Clark is one of the the most underrated revolutionary officers.

This place would get five stars if it were open. Google Maps reports it as open 24/7. There was a locked, metal gate preventing entrance through the door when we visited on May 6, 2024. There were no signs on how to gain entrance.

Wish we could walk inside instead of looking through the gate at the door. Anyway, it was great seeing a piece of history. I went there on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

I knew of Kaskaskia for years and drove over to the "island". Nice drive through farm fields and found the liberty bell and church. Access to Mississippi River views not readily available.

The bell house is truly a sight to see. Haven’t been inside that or the church. Our spot for the eclipse. WOW!
