Stayed here for a couple nights, the beds were so comfy! Just be aware there is no elevator.
We had breakfast downstairs at the restaurant... SO Delicious! Highly recommend. Very convenient location, it's close to everything and glad there is parking.

Wonderfully renovated boutique hotel above a restaurant - we were surprised at how quiet our room was. We couldn't hear the restaurant below at all. There is only stair access to the rooms, but it wasn't a big deal. The bed was so comfortable! The staff were very friendly & accommodating. We loved that it was so close to the things that we wanted to explore.
We ate at Mercer restaurant for dinner & breakfast. Both were very delicious. Dinner was packed, but the staff handled it very well. Our food came out quicker than expected for how busy it was. I had the bacon & egg pad thai for breakfast & loved it!

A tiny gem in downtown Stratford. A short walk to the Tom Patterson and Avon theatres. Has a good restaurant and many nice restaurants on the same block. Rooms are very comfortable and quiet, with Nespresso machine and kettle, selection of tea and coffee. Staff very friendly and helpful, and carried our luggage up to the 3rd floor room. Hot water is very hot, and plentiful; shower head is gentle. Each of the two Queen beds is outfitted with five pillows!

As far as the Mercer goes you have to consider a few things. Firstly...The location is amazing!! Two blocks from Rheo Thompson Candies, little bookstores on the same block and the river path walkway right behind...but parking was a bummer. Pack light! It's a walk up stairs and to the front of the building to check in. If you have alot of luggage...check in first then use your key card for the back entrance to bring things in. Secondly...the restaurant. Great atmosphere! Lots of lights and pillows and quiet corners for an intimate dinner. The food seemed mostly an Asian fusion (but I'm no foodie). It was ok eats but didn't blow my mind...but they would bring an order to your room with full presentation very quickly with no upcharge. Third the rooms had a nice eclectic decor with mismatched lighting (but complimentary), specialized lighted and heated mirrors, heated towel rack (nice touch) and all the basic amenities. The only negative feedback I have is regarding the stairs. There's lots of them! However given the historic nature of the building this is to be expected. But anyone with mobility issues should reconsider a stay here. My major issue was an employee (maybe the chef?) who was reprimanding another employee with VERY full arms (clearly trying to do his job) about who was in charge. While this was happening in the back hallway it didn't stop when we walked by and was exasperated as then the issuing employee was snappy to the receiving employee about getting out of the way of customers. It was an awkward situation. In my books...with 20 years+ of customer service (including management) this should have remained completely private and hushed when we walked by. But aside from that...the rooms are nice, the food is good, and the restaurant is beautiful.

The heart of Stratford! The food was excellent and the staff made you feel right at home. They offered great suggestions on where to go and eat. It was an excellent stay. While your there enjoy the bacon and ale trail.

Sept 13 Update:
After nearly five months, the issue with Mercer Hotel remains unresolved. They only responded after I filed a Better Business Bureau complaint on June 10, 2025 (CASE ID 23452518).

The hotel claims their website notes the lack of an elevator, but it’s buried in small text at the bottom of the page. Our travel agent requested a first-floor room, but there are none. The hotel manager, Ryan O'Donnell, said they communicated that all rooms are on the second and third floors, though our agent says he never received that info.

The stairs are not just ordinary stairs—two long, steep flights, much narrower than modern standards. Had we known, we wouldn't have booked.

While the hotel apologized and blamed the misunderstanding on our agent, they offered no refund, only a future stay. I asked for a refund for one night, but they refused.

In the end, despite polite communication, the Mercer Hotel seems to care more about money than customer satisfaction. And if you’re not convinced by my experience, you don’t have to take my word for it.

The BBB has now reported that attempts to resolve the dispute have "not been successful" and that "Your unresolved case will be reported on the company's BBB Business Profile for other consumers to access. It will remain on their record for 36 months, our standard reporting period. We will use it to note any trends or pattern of complaint activity and should one be noted, will forward our case notes to the proper regulatory agencies for their review and possible enforcement."

Be careful dealing with these guys!

On May 7, 2025, my wife and I booked a two-night stay at the Mercer Hotel in Stratford, Ontario, through our travel agent. The hotel charged us $590+ in advance for May 15-16. Despite our request for a first-floor room, the hotel never mentioned that none were available.

When we arrived, we found two flights of steep, narrow stairs to the second floor—no elevator. At 73 years old, with mobility issues and my wife awaiting knee surgery, climbing those stairs was painful and exhausting. We quickly realized we could not stay there. Additionally, the back parking lot required climbing another set of steep stairs.

I explained the situation to the front desk, and was told we'd likely receive a refund within a week. After waiting, I called and spoke with manager Brooke, who informed me that the hotel policy is not to offer refunds under any circumstances. They refused to reimburse us, showing no concern for our situation.

While the lack of accessibility isn’t the hotel’s fault, their refusal to compensate us is inexcusable. As seniors on a fixed income, that money means a lot to us. This experience serves as a warning to other seniors planning to visit the Stratford Festival.

Had a really wonderful stay. Brooke at the front desk was very helpful and attentive. The restaurant downstairs had an amazing and delicious menu. The beds were comfortable with lots of pillows. The TV had many channels available. Parking was behind the building and very convenient with the rear entrance. Be sure to check in first and then take advantage of the rear entrance when bringing your belongings into the hotel as the front desk is located in the restaurant and might get chaotic if you bring your bags with you.The location was perfect - right in the middle of all the shops we wanted to visit. We will definitely be returning.
