J'y ai passé une soirée et nuit. Après deux nuits sous une tente et plusieurs dizaines de km, ce fut agréable de me retrouver dans une ambiance sympathique et acceuillante. Souper comme en famille. Ne vous attendez pas à un menu. Endroit parfait pour les hikers ayant les deux pieds sur terre!

We spent an evening and a night at Elke's house and it was simply great. This is not an hotel but more of a communal place, adjacent to a hostel. It is a great rest from the trails, it is truly a hiker heaven between the wonderful trails of NL. Ps: Buddy the dog is wonderful <3

No words can describe how magical my stay at Elke's was. Elke is an exceptionally generous host and a fascinating person. Her home is so charming and cozy. This is the perfect place for a backpacker to rest off the trail, do laundry, eat a warm meal and connect with other travelers. I can't wait to return!

We had a lovely time staying at Points East with Elke and her black lab Buddy, sweetest dog on earth! The location is easily accessible from some of the most scenic parts of the East Coast Trail. The house is a rennovated traditional fisherman's house (with delightfully crooked staircase), not fancy but charming and comfortable. The back "yard" is a swath of rocks, grass, vegetable and flower gardens on a bluff overlooking the ocean (there is no simple access to the water or "beach"). Adirondak chairs and picnic tables make relaxing a breeze. There is also a table on the porch, which is a perfect place to hang out if it is raining. Elke prepares a simple breakfast in the cozy kitchen; the dining room table overlooks the ocean. Fresh flowers are on the table and Elke utilizes veggies from her garden in many meals. There are also goats (pettable and very friendly) and chickens. There are three bedrooms, all of which are spotless and comfortable. Shared (immaculate) bathroom. An added bonus is that Elke is one of the founders of the East Coast Trail, a former backpacker, and can advise and help with questions about the trail. Other meals are available on request.

The trails here were absolutely amazing. We are so very grateful for Elkes hard work and dedication to the east coast trail. A must for all to see to truly appreciate. This rustic b&b overlooks beautiful views of the ocean. Our room was clean and comfortable. We didn't mind Elkes 2 dogs but felt they should be living in her quarters and not the guests side, as dog hair was all over the couch. ( for people with allergies) Gor breakfast we loved her elderberry pancakes. Delicoius! We shared dinners with Elke and her helpers each night. Never left hungry. We appreciated Ellie's love and knowledge of Newfoundland as she shared many stories and books. Thankyou so very much for a wonderful trip and all your hard work and dedication.

If you want a genuine St John’s atmosphere with a touch of German culture, East Point is the place for you. Elke is a tremendous host and even a better person. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay there.

Being hikers, we chose this accommodation specifically because it is on the renowned NF East Coast Hiking Trail and is owned by Dr Elke Dettmer whose work in establishing the Trail is widely recognized. We stayed for five nights and Elke’s services included all meals and daily transfers as needed. Our experience was absolutely terrific in every respect. Elke is extremely knowledgeable about the culture and history of NF and went out of her way to introduce us to people and places about which we were curious (she also seems to have a steady stream of interesting visitors). Her charming restored guest house sits right on the cliff edge overlooking the Cove, a dream location. As for hiking the East Coast Trail – it is a knock out! The coastal scenery is spectacular: wild, rugged cliffs interspersed with tiny sandy coves and historic communities, plus lots of whale sightings (early August). We hiked the most northerly section of the Trail and found it well sign posted and very attractively developed to an easy to moderate grade (by Tasmanian standards), winding through forests and meadows at times perilously close to sheer cliff faces. Elke is completely familiar with the Trail and provides maps and excellent day by day advice. “Thank you” Elke for being so resourceful and hospitable (loved your NF meals) - we would adore to return one day! ||Graham McLean & Carol Emden||Tasmania

Simple and basic accommodations but very clean and functional - most welcome after a day of hiking the East Coast trail! Our host, Elke and her pets, truly opened their home to us. She went above and beyond in preparing meals, snacks, supporting and driving hikers, sharing her kitchen for all needs and providing trail tips and great conversation. Thanks to Elke's personal touches, we thoroughly enjoyed a cozy evening socializing with other hikers and viewing a terrific video on the history of Newfoundland. Super hikes from Pouch Cove right from the guest house - and Elke is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of the East Coast Trail.
