Dear Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort & Spa Management,

I am writing to formally express my disappointment following a recent two-night stay at your hotel. While the property itself is beautiful and the views were quite enjoyable, our experience was significantly affected by persistent electrical issues in our room.

During our stay, we encountered a major inconvenience when half the power in our room unexpectedly shut off. I understand that technical issues can occur, but the timing and handling of the situation left much to be desired. Given that we spent very little time in the room during the day, the few moments we were there were made uncomfortable due to the lack of air conditioning, no access to the TV, and extremely limited lighting—only the bathroom and one other light functioned. This also made packing especially difficult.

We reported the issue to the front desk, and while it was resolved the following morning, we were informed the power switch was located outside our room. For the inconvenience, we were offered a $50 credit toward breakfast. Considering the discomfort caused, I found this compensation underwhelming.

To make matters worse, in the early morning on the day of our departure, the power shut off again. When we informed the front desk, their response appeared indifferent and dismissive, which only added to our frustration. This repeated issue and lack of concern from staff made an otherwise pleasant stay end on a disappointing note.

I believe a more appropriate resolution would have been warranted under the circumstances, and I hope you will take this feedback seriously to improve future guest experiences.

We had a really great stay at The Westin Bear Mountain – overall an amazing experience. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and the service was definitely 5-star. Our room was clean and cozy, and the views were beautiful.
The food was another highlight – both breakfast and dinner at the restaurant were fantastic. Easily 5 stars for the food and hospitality!
The only downside, and the reason we’re giving 4 stars instead of 5, is that the spa facilities (like the pool and saunas) weren’t included – you have to pay extra to use them. It’s a bit of a bummer, especially since it’s a spa resort. That kind of access would’ve really made the experience feel complete.
That said, we did enjoy the outdoor hot tub with amazing views, which was a great touch. All in all, still a wonderful place to stay – just wish the spa experience didn’t come with so many extra charges.

Use to love this hotel because I would bring my dog and do the trails around it in the morning. They raised the pet fee from $ 35 to $ 70. You have to ask for bowls, they only give you one, then you have to ask for another one. Room facing the mountains is very nice and love the balcony. Restaurant food is so mediocre , but the view is really beautiful. I was there with my parents. A waiter turned around quickly and flung a hard menu with the pointy end hitting my 82 year old mother in the neck. It was shocking and the waiter did apologize, but they did nothing for her at all. She had a bruise and everything where it hit, but wasn't offered a thing. It was so weird. I think this is my last visit to the Westin Bear Mountain resort. I left my favourite doggy donut there and they never called me about it which was too bad, I was in the area for 3 hours after I checked out, but only noticed when I was at the ferry terminal. Anyhow, this hotel is not that Pet friendly which is too bad.

If You’re Considering Staying at The Westin Bear Mountain in Victoria—Don’t.

We booked a two-night stay at The Westin Bear Mountain, expecting a relaxing, high-end experience at $450 a night. What we got instead was more like an experience I would expect from a motel 6.

On our first night in room #350, we came back from a long day out, lay down to unwind, turned on the TV—and then suddenly, the power in more than half of our room cut out. No TV. No A/C. No ability to charge our phones. No lights. The only functioning light was in the bathroom.

We immediately called the front desk. A gentleman came up and informed us that the breaker panel for our room wasn’t even in our room—it was in the room next door, where the guests were already asleep. So, nothing could be done until morning. We were told the hotel was fully booked, so moving rooms wasn’t an option either. We were assured it would be fixed while we were out the next day.

When we returned the next evening, the power was back on—temporarily. But the fact that the issue was never actually addressed became clear when, early the next morning, the power cut out again. No lights, no A/C, no TV, no charging—again. Trying to pack up our things back into a suitcase in a hot, dark room using nearly dead phone flashlights is not what we had in mind when paying $900 for two nights. It was absurd and we expected better treatment or compensation for the inconvenience as it happened not once but twice.

During our stay, we received zero proactive compensation. We had to ask if anything could be done. The hotel gave us a $50 credit—but it could only be used on non-alcoholic purchases at the hotel (after the lady at the front desk told us we could go get drinks that night). That barely covers breakfast for one person. The breakfast itself was underwhelming. We had to cancel our plans with family just to use the credit, and even then had to spend another $50 out of pocket because the food prices were so high.

When we brought up the second power outage at checkout, the front desk agent was dismissive and defensive. No apology. No ownership. No offer of a partial refund or rate adjustment. Just an offhand comment that it was likely a problem in the neighboring room tripping the breaker—again, not our fault. We got the feeling that because we are young, they don’t feel the need to compensate us appropriately, and instead are taking advantage of us.

We expected so much more from a so-called “premium” resort. Instead, we paid premium prices for a room that only worked part of the time, with little to no accountability from staff. This was supposed to be a special getaway we’d saved up for to treat ourselves and visit family. It ended up being a stressful, disappointing, and frankly infuriating experience.

Bottom line: don’t waste your money here. If I wanted the electricity to completely shut off twice in two days and be met with indifference by staff, I would have stayed at a budget motel for $80 a night. You’re better off staying anywhere else in Victoria—The Westin Bear Mountain is absolutely not worth the price or the frustration. We will certainly not be staying here again, nor will any of our family or friends.

I can guarantee that zero accountability will be taken and it will be the typical “sorry to hear about your experience, we will pass the feedback along.” I would like a manager to reach out to me, however with the lack of customer service displayed during our stay it seems as though I will have to reach out myself.

Horrible experience as Marriott Titanium guest and management did not care.

1) Room cleanliness and Hygiene:

a) My daughter found a bunch of hairs in the bedding when she slept in her sofa bed. That left her with a gross feeling. Given that was the first impression, we calmed her down and let the first night go. There were water stains on the coffee table which further added to the grossness feeling for our family.

b) I was promised next day will be better housekeping. I walked out of the shower after returning on next day evening. The first towel I lift seemed like a cleaning rag with dirty brown stains on it. I am glad I did not let it touch my body before noticing (pic attached). THIS IS TERRIBLE and I don't believe the hotel paid any attention to cleanliness on the property.

2) Maintenance issues:

a) Bathroom faucet slow - when we used master bath in the morning, the faucet was hardly flowing. It was very irritating to get the water flow and it made very difficult for us to get ready in the morning. I don't know why they would think something like this would be appropriate for a guest. I have attached the video.

b) We complained and the faucet was fixed but my main bathroom latch was broken, this is never ending. My family could not take a peaceful, private bath and it was a very irritating experience for us.

3) Hair in the food - this was the final blow to our stay when our breakfast came with hair strands ... it sums everything up that this hotel does not care for hygiene at all.

In the end, our experience was this was a big old, unmaintained resort which charged pricing per Westin brand but management did not care to take care of hygiene or guests.
